Question 1

What is an SIA licence, and why do I need one?

Accepted Answer

An SIA licence is the official permit issued by the Security Industry Authority that you must hold to work legally in most frontline private security roles in the UK, such as door supervision, security guarding and CCTV operation. It confirms you have completed the required training and passed the SIA's identity and background checks. Working in a licensable role without one is a criminal offence, which is why employers ask to see your SIA badge before taking you on.

Question 2

What SIA training is available in Liverpool?

Accepted Answer

SIA training in Liverpool covers Door Supervisor, Security Guard and CCTV Operator (PSS) licence courses, plus Door Supervisor and Security Guard refresher courses, Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and Personal Licence Holder training. ESO Education and Training, an SIA approved provider, delivers all of these from its centre in Bootle, serving Liverpool and the wider North West.

Question 3

How do I get SIA training?

Accepted Answer

To get SIA training, you book a place on an SIA approved course that matches the role you want, complete the training, and pass the assessments, then apply to the SIA for your licence. ESO runs approved courses in Bootle with flexible dates including weekends, so you can pick a start date that suits you and book online or by phone.

Question 4

What qualifications do I need for SIA training?

Accepted Answer

To start SIA training with ESO you must be at least 18, have the right to work in the UK, basic English at Level 1, valid photo ID, and a background clean enough to pass the DBS check required for an SIA licence. No previous security experience is needed, as most learners begin as complete beginners.

Question 5

Do I need first aid training before my SIA course?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A recognised first aid qualification is now required before you take the main SIA licence courses, so you need it in place first. ESO's Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course meets this requirement and can be booked alongside your SIA training, so you complete both in the right order.

Question 6

What if I've never worked in security before?

Accepted Answer

No experience is needed to train with ESO, as most learners start as complete beginners. Courses are taught by experienced instructors using real world scenarios, at a pace that suits newcomers, and you get career guidance on job prospects and interviews once you qualify. ESO has helped hundreds of people begin a security career from scratch.

Question 7

How long does SIA training take?

Accepted Answer

How long SIA training takes depends on the course. As a guide, Door Supervisor training usually runs over about six days, Security Guard about four days, and CCTV Operator about three days, each combining classroom learning with assessments, while Close Protection is longer at roughly two to three weeks. ESO confirms the exact dates and timetable for each course when you book.

Question 8

Can I work as a Security Guard with a Door Supervisor licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A Door Supervisor licence lets you work as both a Door Supervisor and a Security Guard, making it the more flexible of the two. A Security Guard licence, however, does not allow you to work in door supervision. For that reason many learners choose the Door Supervisor course, and ESO can advise which licence fits the work you are aiming for.

Question 9

How much does SIA training cost?

Accepted Answer

SIA training prices vary by course, and the current cost of each is shown on its own course page rather than here, so the figure you see is always up to date. Fully funded places may also be available for eligible learners, such as those on certain benefits or low incomes. Contact ESO to confirm pricing and check whether you qualify.

Question 10

Is there free or government funded SIA training in Liverpool?

Accepted Answer

Fully funded SIA training may be available in Liverpool for eligible learners, often those who are unemployed, on certain benefits or on a low income, and funding can sometimes cover the licence application fee as well. Eligibility rules change, so the best step is to contact ESO to check whether you qualify for a funded place on a current course.

Question 11

How much does an SIA licence cost?

Accepted Answer

The SIA licence application fee is £204 for applications made from 1 April 2026, paid directly to the Security Industry Authority through GOV.UK when you apply. This fee is separate from the cost of your training course, and it covers a three year licence. Since the SIA sets and occasionally reviews the fee, it is worth checking the current amount on GOV.UK before applying.

Question 12

How do I apply for an SIA licence after completing my training?

Accepted Answer

Once you have passed your SIA course and received your qualification, you apply for your licence directly through the SIA on GOV.UK. The application includes identity verification and a criminal record check, and you pay the SIA licence fee at that stage. ESO helps you set up your SIA account and complete the application, so the process is straightforward once your course is done.

Question 13

What happens if I fail my SIA exam?

Accepted Answer

If you do not pass your SIA exam on the first attempt, you can resit it. ESO gives you your results on the day, so there is no waiting weeks to find out, and instructors prepare you thoroughly before the assessment.

Question 14

How quickly can I start working after my SIA training?

Accepted Answer

Most learners are ready to work within about four to six weeks of finishing their SIA course with ESO, which is the time it usually takes for the licence to be issued once the exam is passed. You get your results on the day and your certificate within a few working days, ESO helps you set up your SIA account and licence application, and your SIA badge usually arrives within four to six weeks.

Question 15

How long is an SIA licence valid for?

Accepted Answer

An SIA licence is valid for three years. To keep working after that, you renew it through the SIA before it expires, which now means completing the required refresher or top up training for your role and keeping your first aid certificate in date. ESO runs the refresher courses you need for renewal.

Question 16

Do I need refresher or top up training to renew my SIA licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Refresher, or top up, training is now required to renew a Door Supervisor or Security Guard licence, and from April 2026 it also applies to Close Protection renewals. The training brings your skills up to the latest SIA standards before you reapply. ESO offers the refresher courses for each role, so you can complete the right one in good time before your licence expires.

Question 17

Where can I get SIA training in Liverpool?

Accepted Answer

ESO Education and Training runs its SIA courses from a centre at St Mary's Complex, Waverley Street, Bootle, L20 4AP, a few minutes from Liverpool city centre and easy to reach by public transport. As an SIA approved provider, it serves Liverpool, Bootle, Southport and the wider North West, with flexible course dates including weekends. You can reach the team on 0800 144 8458.

Question 18

Is there free parking at ESO Training centre?

Accepted Answer

Yes, 100% free on-site parking is provided for all students. Unlike city centre venues where parking can cost £15 to £25 per day, ESO has its own dedicated on-site car park at St Mary's Complex in Bootle.
